Charles Dickens pensait que les enfants méritaient une vraie histoire, bien racontée. Il a donc écrit lui-même l'histoire de l'Angleterre, depuis les Romains et le roi Alfred jusqu'à Élisabeth, à la guerre civile et à l'époque de la reine Victoria. Il a ses favoris, ses méchants, et il ne vous parle jamais comme à un petit. Attendez-vous à des plaisanteries, à des jugements tranchants et à des scènes dont vous vous souviendrez. Le texte a d'abord paru dans son magazine Household Words. Les adultes aiment aussi ce livre.
