Voici le dernier roman achevé de Dickens, et il donne le sentiment d'une ville entière entre ses couvertures. La fortune d'un boueur, un héritier disparu, une fille qui ne se laissera pas acheter et une autre qui rame sur le fleuve sombre: leurs histoires se verrouillent lentement les unes aux autres. Il y a des traîtres à huer, des cœurs doux à encourager, et des mystères qui font tourner les pages. Dickens le finit par son propre post scriptum, daté de septembre 1865, et le livre mérite sa fin.
