Dus schreef hij het verhaal van Engeland zelf, van de Romeinen en koning Alfred tot Elizabeth, burgeroorlog en de tijd van koningin Victoria. Hij heeft favorieten, hij heeft schurken, en hij praat nooit neerbuigend tegen je. Verwacht grappen, scherpe oordelen en scènes die je zult onthouden. Het verscheen eerst in zijn tijdschrift Household Words. Ook volwassenen houden van dit boek, en je zult snel zien waarom.
