Mary Kingsley ging naar West-Afrika toen bijna geen Engelse vrouw daar alleen reisde. Ze peddelde rivieren in kano's, verzamelde vreemde vissen voor wetenschappers, handelde met dorpen, viel in dierenstrikken en lachte om haar eigen rampen in een doorweekte zwarte jurk. Ze luisterde ook aandachtig en leerde dat Afrikaanse gewoonten op hun eigen voorwaarden zin hadden. Haar boek bewijst dat nieuwsgierigheid en goede humor overal deuren openen.
