A cyclone picks up Dorothy's Kansas farmhouse and sets it down in the land of Oz, and the only way home is the yellow brick road to the Emerald City. L. Frank Baum called his book a modernized fairy tale for American children, and with the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion for company, it became the first great American one.
